Hesitancy to Commitment

In our work, developing leaders and businesses to bring their purpose to life wholeheartedly, there is huge need to tackle hesitancy as it directly influences one’s ability to act with their whole heart to pursue anything.

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.” (Murray, W.)

Hesitancy is the failure to do something quickly because one is nervous or uncertain (Cambridge Dictionary). As a leadership behaviour, it can manifest in lack of proactiveness, or lateness when addressing important obstacles in creating and executing required strategy in an organization.

Hesitancy is therefore a costly leadership behaviour which ultimately impacts the success of an organization’s development, its wellbeing and welfare.

To combat hesitancy, a leader must look at themselves, and the system as a whole and create deliberate acts of deep listening and care, through a whole-body approach. Instead of focusing on moving in a fast pace, leaders must ensure to allow for spaciousness. Our emotions need the space to be expressed and processed. This creates a culture of openness and trust in an organization, which in turn reduces hesitancy.
